Researchers at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences uncover hidden health risks associated with endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastic and beverage cans, stressing the need for improved packaging materials and enhanced consumer awareness.
A recent study conducted by Dr. Sina Dobaradaran, Professor of Environmental Health Engineering Systems at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences' Environmental Health and Energy Research Center, has revealed potential health risks associated with compounds found in plastic and beverage cans.
The research focused on the migration of endocrine-disrupting chemicals, such as plasticizers and Bisphenols, commonly used in the production of plastic packaging and canned beverages.
Dr. Dobaradaran's team examined the migration levels of these compounds into common beverages based on global research findings. The study showed that the migration varies based on the packaging type, beverage type, and storage conditions, including exposure to high temperatures, sunlight, and prolonged storage.
High concentrations of these chemicals were detected in popular beverages like tea, coffee, cold drinks, and dairy products, particularly in developing countries.
